In addition to the look, yoga mats differ mainly in their manageability, the material, the thickness, the care, the price and the longevity. The visual aspects are a matter of taste - you can choose the yoga mat according to your personal feelings and tailored to the ambience. It becomes more difficult with the other criteria: generalizations and general recommendations are hardly possible here, since the individual requirements are too different.

Where is the yoga mat used?

Do you practice yoga at home or do you have to transport the mat regularly? If it is used in your own four walls, it is less important how heavy the yoga mat is and whether it can be rolled up easily. For mobile use, on the other hand, we recommend a lighter version that you can easily take with you. However, the quality should not suffer as a result, and a lightweight must of course meet your requirements.

size, thickness and slip resistance

The standard dimensions of a yoga mat are around 175 to 185 centimeters in length and 61 centimeters in width. But you can also find plus-size models if you feel more comfortable with them or if your stature requires it. Which thickness is ideal depends in particular on the yoga style. The average standard is around four to five millimeters.

For dynamic styles like vinyasa, a thinner mat is a better choice, while for gentler styles that involve holding poses, good cushioning is more beneficial to the bones and joints. On a thicker mat that offers good padding, you have a less stable footing than on a pad that is a few millimeters thick.

In this regard, slip resistance also plays a role: a non-slip underside ensures that the mat stays in place even during dynamic processes. A non-slip top helps you hold positions and balance. This is especially true for beginners. Advanced yogis, on the other hand, occasionally prefer a yoga mat that offers less support because they have to use their own muscles more on it. A highly non-slip surface that gives you a secure footing can be a hindrance to smooth movements on the floor. In terms of thickness and slip resistance, style and personal demands on the yoga mat are therefore important decision criteria.

The material determines the various properties of yoga mats. This includes maintenance and cleaning options. Models made of cotton or new wool are soft, easy to care for and suitable for gentle and meditative exercises. PVC is more non-slip and offers better cushioning. Yoga mats made of TPE are characterized by their very low weight and can also have excellent slip resistance. Pay attention to whether the material is open-pored or closed with a thermoplastic: An open-pored yoga mat, for example, absorbs sweat well, closed surfaces, on the other hand, are more repellent and easier to clean with a damp cloth. Sweat formation on the yoga mat, however, impairs the slip resistance. Other common materials are natural rubber, jute and cork - these also have specific properties that can be decisive for their suitability for your purposes.
